For the epitomé of what is great in modern choral performance in Ottawa, don’t forget to check out the great new choir in town, Aella. They are presenting their début full concert, Snow Angel, tomorrow night at First Baptist. (Aella, in case you are too scared to ask, is pronounced Eye-La.)
Snow Angel is “a 5-movement work for choir, piano, percussion, narrators and cello written by Ontario composer Sarah Quartel. The concert will also feature the premiere performance of ‘A Little Snow Was Here and There’ — a beautiful new work written for Aella by Montreal-based composer Matthew C. Lane — as well as music by Canadian composers Stephen Hatfield and David MacIntyre. Rounding out a diverse program will be music by the Tragically Hip, Bulgarian, South Africa, and Japanese folk songs, and Michael Bojesen’s stunning ‘Eternity.'”
Attendance is by free will donation, and is at First Baptist on the corner of Elgin and Laurier at 19:30 Saturday, 11th February.
You can read our feature on Aella to find out more about this amazing new choral group. I attended one of their rehearsal and anyone attending is in for a musical experience of the highest quality, believe me.
